Accident With Serious Injuries on I-264 in Portsmouth is Reported

Interstate 264 has been making the wrong kinds of headlines overnight with two incidents. An accident with serious injuries on I-264 in Portsmouth was reported on Wednesday night.

Virginia State Police reported the two-vehicle crash occurred just before 10:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, just east of Portsmouth Boulevard.

A motorist was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, reported Channel 13 News.

At least one person was injured in this crash. They are being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused serious congestion on Wednesday night. All eastbound lanes of I-264 were blocked near Portsmouth Blvd. as emergency crews worked the scene. A detour was put into place.

Police said the cause of the accident with serious injuries on 1-264 in Portsmouth is undetermined.

The next morning another detour was placed on I-264 in Portsmouth after a fuel spill from a broken down tractor-trailer, state police reported. No injuries were reported due to this incident.

On interstates like I-264 in Portsmouth, one mistake can cause accidents with horrendous injuries or even fatalities.

There are numerous intersections in a short space on this section of I-264 and traffic can slow down suddenly at the Downtown Tunnel to Norfolk.

Recently, we reported on how a 32-year-old passenger died in a crash when a car overturned on I-264 in Portsmouth.

A 23-year-old driver from Portsmouth was hit with DUI and manslaughter charges after the crash. Police said he was driving a Ford Focus east on I-264 when he tried to avoid another vehicle, lost control of his car on the interstate and flipped it.

The police report said three people in the back seat of the Focus were thrown out of the car. Paramedics transported the other passengers from the wreck scene to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. They were treated for serious injuries. Tragically, one woman failed to survive the crash.

Virginia State Police closed I-264 at Greenwood Drive for six hours as they investigated the cause of the serious wreck.
