Cooper Hurley Backs Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia
Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia is another great Hampton Roads non-profit organization that Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is happy to have supported for years.
Cooper Hurley founding partner Jim Hurley is a board member of the Virginia Beach-based organization and our law firm is a regular sponsor. He recently appeared in a video with Tracy Fick, Director of Development and Marketing at Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia.
CCEV has been working with the most vulnerable people in the Hampton Roads community for decades.
It was founded in 1932 as the Norfolk Bureau of Catholic Charities to care for widows, orphaned and abandoned children. It now helps the disadvantaged across a wide range of spectrums.
“We help people from all stages of life from infancy to senior citizens, said CEO Chris Tan in a recent interview.
Those vital services include:
Services for senior citizens;
Mental health counseling.
“We focus our services on the poor and the vulnerable in our community and we are here to help,” Chris Tan said.
Recently, CCEVA received funding once again through the Virginia Department of Social Services to continue to provide an evidence-based family education course called Strengthening Families.
It’s a program that runs for 14 consecutive weeks and involves the entire family. Families receive education in topics ranging from positive discipline to conflict resolution and effective communication, important building blocks in an increasingly fragmented age.
The program provides both parents and children with facilitators who provide age-appropriate education. The program includes ways to boost family interactions such as bringing the family back together to enjoy meals. The interaction allows facilitators to look at how family members communicate and to provide help and guidance.
“Catholic charities is an amazing organization that helps people of all beliefs,” said Jim Hurley
Tracy Fick said Catholic Charities serves as many as 8,000 local families every year in areas like mental health counseling, senior services, homelessness, youth and family services and financial counseling.
Every year, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers helps important causes in the Hampton Roads community. To find out more about Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia or to make a donation, please visit the organization’s website.
Don’t forget to support our latest ‘Facebook likes’ campaign that supports Tyree Ministries, a Norfolk-based non-profit that helps deprived young people in our community and overseas. For every new like of our Facebook page, we’ll donate $1 to W.D. Tyree Ministries.

John Cooper is a veteran of personal injury law practice in Virginia. A native Virginian, he was raised in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He has more than 20 years of experience handling personal injury cases and recently handled the largest auto accident settlement in 2010, according to VA Lawyers Weekly. The award provided $3.5 million to a child whose young father died when the vehicle he was a passenger in was rear-ended by a careless truck driver.
Jim Hurley has been practicing law throughout Virginia for more than two-and-a-half decades. During his career, he has tried more than 100 jury trials — a staggering number — and handled hundreds more that were settled out of court. He is guided by the principle that the client is in charge of his or her case and should be kept fully aware of the litigation process. Jim has been awarded an AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating given, for his practice of law. He was named in Virginia Super Lawyers in 2014, 2015, 2016.
Bill O’Mara started his legal career in 2008, moving back to his home town of Chesapeake, VA. He has practiced in the field of plaintiffs’ personal injury and other litigation. He has gained extensive court room and trial experience, including contested trials before judges and juries across Hampton Roads. In 2014, Mr. O’Mara joined Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers as an associate attorney. He became a partner in 2017.
Cooper Hurley awards three $2,000 college scholarships annually to high school seniors in the Tidewater and Eastern Shore areas of Virginia. Eligible students can submit an essay of 500 to 1,000 words on the subject of Distracted Driving. We established this program to aid worthy scholars and to raise awareness of the tragic consequences of distracted driving, which we encounter too often in our practice.
