Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Backs the Suffolk Lady Cougars Basketball

At Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we aim to support organizations that change lives in Hampton Roads and further afield. The Suffolk Lady Cougars is a prime example.

The Lady Cougars is the only all girls AAU basketball organization in Suffolk., according to head coach and director Beverly Gaston.

We were encouraged to support the team because Amaya Freeman, the 13-year-old daughter of legal assistant Candace Freeman is a Lady Cougar.

Gaston said the Lady Cougars was a recreational team for about five years before she took the leap to set up an Amateur Athletic Union team. “It’s the first and only all-girls AAU basketball organization in Suffolk. We created it in July 2017. We have had immense success and lots and lots of participation that we never expected,” she said.

“We were initially going for one team and we ended up with six teams based on the participation,” Gaston said.

The team does not just focus on basketball but carries out community service away from the court.

“Definitely education comes first,” said Gaston.

“We do a lot of public speaking. We also work on personal skills for the girls. How you can conduct yourself as a lady and actually sitting at a dinner table learning how to eat … that’s important too. Not just basketball,” she said.

Gaston said many of the girls in the Suffolk Lady Cougars come from lower income backgrounds. She said donations are important for the organization.

“It’s important that we receive donations to help these girls sustain in our organization. If we did not have these donations a lot of these kids would probably be by the wayside,” she said.

Gaston said the girls are expected to go out and seek donations for the Lady Cougars.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ donation will help the development of one of the girls on the team. To donate to the Suffolk Lady Cougars or find out more about the team see its website.

Every year Cooper Hurley supports numerous great causes in our community. We are currently supporting the Virginia Beach SPCA in our fall Facebook “Likes” campaign.

For every new like of Cooper Hurley’s Facebook page, we will donate $1 to the SPCA. To find out more about Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers call (757) 455-0077.
