Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Supports the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia has provided vital free legal services to the poor and needy in Hampton Roads and further afield for decades.

It’s a nonprofit law firm that was founded in 1966 and presently has offices in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Williamsburg and Belle Haven.

However, in recent years, the financial pressures have increased on the Legal Aid Society as it faced funding cuts, making it harder for the needy to obtain legal services.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has been a regular supporter of the Legal Aid Society. Last week partner Jim Hurley presented a check for $1,000 to Ray Hartz, the executive director of the Legal Aid Society.

Jim Hurley said the firm was happy to help the Legal Aid Society because of the great work it does.

“We desperately need the help of the community,” said Ray Hartz. “We had our funding cut by over a third a few years ago during the years of the recession. While we have had some increases, we are nowhere near where we were five or 10 years ago. We have relied on the community to keep us going,” he said.

“We provide free legal help in civil matters to poor people,” Hartz said.

The work of the Legal Aid Society includes helping the victims of domestic violence and their children and people who are victims of evictions or unfair loans.

“In a variety of civil matters we provide free lawyers so as people are treated fairly in the courts here in Virginia,” Hartz said.

Our Facebook likes campaign in support of W.D. Tyree Ministries, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged youth, is still running. See more details about this cause on our website.
