Fatal Dump Truck Crash Reported on Military Highway in Chesapeake
By Bill O'Mara, Chesapeake Truck Accident Lawyer
Accidents involving big rigs and dump trucks are very often serious and are more likely to be fatal. I was saddened to read about a crash this morning in my home city of Chesapeake that claimed a life after a van was stopped for a tire change.
Chesapeake police confirmed one person is dead after a dump truck hit a van that had pulled over by the side of the road to change a tire.
The crash occurred at the intersection of S. Military Highway and Heidi Drive at around 4.35 a.m., WAVY.com reported.
Kelly O’Sullivan, a spokeswoman with Chesapeake Police, said three adults were in a van that was pulled over to the side of the road to change a tire when a large truck struck them. One of the three adults died at the scene while the other two adults who were in the van and the dump truck driver were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Few further details are available.
My thoughts are with the family of the deceased after this tragic accident and with those who were injured.
Drivers of big rigs have a responsibility to look out for broken down cars by the side of the road, even when visibility is poor or in the early hours.
Accidents involving dump trucks are often extremely serious. Last year a cyclist in Portsmouth suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a dump truck.
