Fiery Emporia Tractor-Trailer Crash Causes Injuries

We were concerned to read about a fiery Emporia tractor-trailer crash this morning that involved two big rigs.

Emporia police confirmed one of the drivers was transported to a local hospital after the Route 58 wreck but few other details were available.

The accident was reported at about 11 a.m., close to the Arby’s restaurant in Emporia which is near Market Drive, reported WAVY.com.

Images supplied to the Hampton Roads-based TV station by a viewer showed black smoke and flames coming from the cab of one of the trucks.

No details were available on the injuries to the driver who was hospitalized.

The location of the crash in Emporia

This Emporia fiery tractor-trailer crash highlights the potential for crashes at Emporia which sees a heavy volume of truck traffic.

Emporia is at the intersection between Interstate 95 and Route 58. Many truckers access the interstate here or get off it onto Route 58 to reach the port of Hampton Roads.

Collisions between two tractor trailers are not as uncommon as we might think. They are often devastating. We discuss the issue here on our Virginia trucking accident blog.

In January, two tractor-trailers collided in Hanover County near Richmond. The wreck left a driver and a passenger of a big rig suffering from serious injuries.

Fiery Emporia Tractor-Trailer Crash is the Latest on Route 58

Route 58 in Hampton Roads and further west has its fair share of serious accidents. Earlier this year, two big rigs collided on Route 58 in Chesapeake. Two people were injured.

In 2013, the driver of a TME Enterprises truck was killed on Route 58 in Southampton County when the truck overturned close to Emporia.

Route 58 is Virginia’s longest highway. It’s the subject of an ongoing widening project by Virginia Department of Transportation.
