Jefferson Avenue Pedestrian Collision in Newport News Kills Man

I was horrified to read about another fatal Jefferson Avenue pedestrian collision, the fifth this year in the City of Newport News.

In what has become an all too familiar scenario, the driver failed to stop at the accident scene on fast-moving Jefferson Avenue.

A report on WAVY.com noted police are seeking a light, full-sized truck that was heading north on Jefferson Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

It hit a man who was crossing the road in the middle of the block near Morris Drive. WAVY reported the man was returning to the Thrift Inn Motel where he had been staying for the last two weeks.

Police said the driver would have known he or she hit someone, but failed to stop at the accident scene. The vehicle sustained front end damage according to reports. It was left missing a headlight and a side view mirror after the impact with the pedestrian.

A witness on Jefferson Avenue heard a loud noise and saw the crash. She called 911. Police have urged then public to contact them with the identity of the hit-and-run truck driver who could be facing a felony.

Newport News Assistant Chief Stacy Kelly said Tuesday night’s wreck was the fifth fatal auto-pedestrian crash this year. It’s not the first Jefferson Avenue pedestrian collision we have seen this year.

A school janitor was killed in a Jefferson Avenue pedestrian collision this summer. He was crossing at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Shields Road.

Kelly urged pedestrians to cross at intersections. However, the senior police officer said the police department is working with traffic engineering and the city attorney to address auto-pedestrian wrecks in Newport News

Police have not identified the victim from Tuesday night’s wreck. They are looking at nearby businesses for surveillance video of the crash.

My thoughts are with the family of the victim. It’s horrendous to lose a loved one in this fashion and worse still if a driver leaves the scene. It makes me wonder what the at-fault driver may have had to hide.

If you lose a loved one in a collision with a truck you may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against a trucker or a company. Call our Newport News truck accident attorneys at (757) 455-0077 for a free and confidential consultation.
