More than 3,000 Xarelto Lawsuits Progress in the Courts

The blood thinner Xarelto is one of the most controversial drugs currently on the market, given its potentially-deadly side effects.

Now thousands of lawsuits brought against the drug’s manufacturer have been consolidated into one case for pretrial motions.

Xarelto has been linked to many lawsuits

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) has ordered the consolidation of more than 3,000 cases against Xarelto and its manufacturers. Those who have taken legal action claim the blood thinner placed them at a substantially higher risk of internal bleeding.

Xarelto is used to treat people who are undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery as well as hypertension, heart rhythm, and other valvular heart conditions.

On our website page about this dangerous drug, we point out Xarelto has been linked to life-threatening and, sometimes fatal, bleeding in patients. Its potentially deadly side effects also include deep vein thrombosis and strokes.

Xarelto has no known antidote yet available to control bleeding while warfarin – the more traditional drug it was intended to replace, does. Xarelto’s manufacturers Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s New Jersey-based unit, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, are yet to release information for doctors on how to treat this life-threatening issue. A raft of wrongful death lawsuits are linked to Xarelto.

In the forthcoming litigation, the plaintiffs claim taking Xarelto can more than double the risk of stomach bleeding. One patient died from a blood transfusion that was intended to treat stomach bleeding linked to Xarelto.

The Liability of Xarelto’s Manufacturers

The failure to adequately warn of a drug’s side effects, can render a pharmaceutical company liable. Many big drug companies seek to put profit before patient safety. Drug companies are required to test their products rigorously but many fail to perform enough tests.

The Litigation over Xarelto

There are currently 6,457 pending lawsuits regarding Xarelto, in multidistrict litigation. Most of them filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. About 40 so-called “bellwether” cases will be heard in Louisiana. These are likely to provide a pointer to the success of the larger body of cases.

If you or a loved one has suffered side effects from this drug it’s important to contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible so as you can be added to the cases. Please call our Virginia dangerous drugs team at (757) 455-0077.
