Trucker is Charged over Fatal Fredericksburg Big Rig Crash

When truckers lose control of their vehicles, the results can be devastating for other drivers and passengers in cars. A trucker has been charged over last week’s fatal Fredericksburg big rig crash.

The 62-year-old driver was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor reckless driving over last Thursday’s crash, reported The Free Lance Star.

Last week’s fatal Fredericksburg big rig crash left a woman from Spotsylvania County dead and three others injured, according to police.

Police said the trucker was driving a semi-truck, without a trailer, in the center lane of eastbound State Route 3 just before midday. He moved into a right lane and collided with five cars stopped for a red light at Fredericksburg’s Gateway Boulevard intersection.

The idea of a big rig plowing into stationary cars is terrifying and this crash proved to be devastating. Police said 54-year-old Shari Laney, was trapped in the vehicle and died at the accident scene.

Three others were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Fredericksburg police confirmed.

The injured included an 80-year-old man who was in the car with Laney; a 56-year-old woman from Locust Grove and a 46-year-old man from Ruther Glen.

One of those victims has been released but two others remain in the hospital, one of them in a critical condition, police said.

The trucker was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was reportedly still at the hospital as of Friday morning, police said.

Police and rescue crews remained at the accident scene for more than two hours. Part of eastbound Route 3 and both Interstate 95 exits to the highway in that direction were closed during that time. The closures caused congestion on Route 3 and on the I-95 interstate for hours.

What Caused the Fatal Fredericksburg Big Rig Crash?

It’s not clear what caused last week’s fatal Fredericksburg crash. However, when a rig crashes into stopped vehicles, the consequences are often serious. In some cases, tired truckers have caused wrecks of this nature. However, police have not disclosed if this was a factor behind the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who lost her life through no fault of her own.
