Dump trucks are bulky and notorious for their blind spots. I was horrified to read about how two workers were run over and killed this week by one of these rigs in Virginia.
The incident occurred on Tuesday on U.S. 11, according to Virginia State Police.
Construction crews from Staunton-based B&S Contracting were working on a pavement at the intersection of U.S. 340 and U.S. 11 in Greenville, VA.
According to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Kenneth Hyden a dump truck unloading asphalt was reversing when it ran over the male and female worker and dragged them some distance along the road.
The woman was killed at the scene. The man succumbing soon afterwards to his injuries, he said.
Police later identified the victims as Felimon V. Aizpuro II, 38, of Staunton, and Debbie S. Huffman, 50, of Port Republic.
The thoughts of our Virginia trucking wreck lawyers are with the families of the victims after this terrible incident.
Media reports said the dump truck was being driven by a 60-year-old Staunton man. It’s not clear if he will be charged over the fatalities.
Accidents involving dump trucks are not common but they often prove to be fatal when they occur.
Earlier this year a woman was killed and two people were seriously injured when a dump truck hit their minivan on Military Highway in Chesapeake.
Last year a Coast Guard suffered serious injuries when he was knocked off his bike by a dump truck in Portsmouth.
