Virginia Beach Scooter Rider is Killed in Crash With Van on Wolfsnare Road

This month, we are highlighting some of the hazards caused to motorcyclists and others on two wheels by other cars. Drivers who make left turns are one of the biggest threats in Virginia.

I was saddened to read of another crash that claimed the life of a man on a scooter in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach Thursday.

A scooter rider was killed in Virginia Beach

Police say the fatal accident occurred at about 11.45 a.m. at the intersection of Gloria Place and Wolfsnare Road. It involved a van and a scooter.

Inevitably, in such a wreck the rider is likely to be more seriously injured. Tragically, the scooter rider was declared dead at the wreck scene. Our thoughts are with the family of this rider.

Police said the driver of the scooter was heading east on Wolfsnare, while the van was heading west on Wolfsnare. Details remain scant, but it appears that the van driver made a left onto Gloria Place when the accident happened.

Although neither alcohol nor excess speed were factors in this accident, we do know the failure of drivers to see a motorcyclist when making a turn is a leading cause of crashes involving motorcyclists, scooters or mopeds.

Vehicles like vans often have blind spots. However, that’s not a reason to fail to look out for smaller vehicles such as motorcycles.

At Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we are strong advocates of the rights of motorcyclists and the need for other drivers to share the road with riders. Drivers also need to look out for cyclists and pedestrians.

Our attorneys have represented the families of deceased riders in claims against the insurance companies of drivers. You can find out more about wrongful death claims in Virginia by visiting our dedicated webpage.

About 800 people die in auto wrecks in Virginia every year. It’s a large number compared to deaths in other kinds of accidents. When you lose a loved one, one of the last things you want to do is deal with a lawsuit. However, a death in the family often leaves serious financial issues as well as heartbreak.
