Woman is Killed in Head-on Wreck on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County

Head-on accidents are often very serious and fatal due to the forces involved. This month, a driver on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County, Virginia was killed when another car crossed the median.

I was saddened to read about the death of Hannah Hochstetler, 26, of Jackson, Mississippi. She was driving on I-81 when she was hit by a Jeep Liberty. She died at the accident scene.

Virginia State Police said a 72-year-old man from Oklahoma was charged with reckless driving in the wake of the fatal crash on Jan. 19.

They said the man was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty North on I-81 when he lost control of the SUV. He ran off the left side of the roadway. His Jeep crossed the median and struck Ms. Hochstetler who was driving a 1999 Honda Civic traveling southbound.

The driver who caused the wreck was wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. The Oklahoma man was subsequently charged with reckless driving.

Hochstetler was wearing a seatbelt. Caleb Hochstetler, a passenger in the Honda, was wearing his seatbelt. He was also taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Media reports said Virginia Accident Reconstruction assisted with the investigation.

The crash occurred near mile marker 134 between Salem and Dixie Caverns. Traffic was backed up for six miles.

It’s always tragic when young lives are lost due to the fault of another driver in Virginia. A report in Mennonite World Review said Hannah Hochstetler was a co-leader of the Mennonite Mission Network Service Adventure unit in Jackson, Miss.

Caleb Hochstetler was reported to be her husband. He was still being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

The report contained a quote from Susan Nisly, director of Service Adventure. She said:

“Hannah was a truly beautiful soul. I met Hannah and Caleb a year ago and will never forget the smile that lit up her face when I told her we were opening a new unit in Jackson. It was at that moment that I knew they were going to be a wonderful addition to Service Adventure.”

Reckless and careless driving wreck lives. Long trips on interstates can be tiresome but you should make sure to retain your concentration and take regular breaks.
