Interstate 264 in Portsmouth is a fast-moving highway with many intersections. Every year it sees serious and fatal crashes.

I was saddened to read about the death of a 55-year-old woman on this interstate on Tuesday night.

I-264 in Portsmouth sees numerous crashes

The crash closed lanes on I-264 just after 7:30 p.m. and caused serious delays. Police said it was a single vehicle accident. The driver was a woman from Portsmouth who died at the scene. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt. Police said a 12-year-old who was in the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

We have noted before about how single vehicle accidents are the most common kind of wrecks on the highways of Virginia and North Carolina. Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes the highest number of deaths we see on the roads are occupants of passenger vehicles. On numerous occasions, we have represented the families of passengers who are killed in single vehicle wrecks.

All lanes of I-264 were closed on Tuesday evening and traffic was being detoured.

One of the worst crashes this year in Hampton Roads occurred on I-264. In that crash, a pickup truck hit a broken down car on the interstate. The fiery crash in Virginia Beach claimed the lives of two children.

On the interstate where the traffic moves quickly, a sudden lapse of concentration or a distraction can cause a terrible wreck. On I-264 in Portsmouth, the traffic will often stop abruptly on the approach to the Downtown Tunnel, so you need to be ready to react if you see brake lights ahead of you.
