Woman is Killed on Settler’s Landing Road in Hampton in School Bus Wreck

By Bill O'Mara, Hampton Injury Lawyer

I was disturbed to read reports this afternoon about a crash involving a school bus and a car in Hampton that claimed the life of the driver of the smaller vehicle.

The Daily Press reported that a woman was killed Wednesday in a crash involving a Hampton school bus at the intersection of Settlers Landing Road and West Pembroke Avenue.

The wreck involved two vehicles and occurred at about 4:30 p.m. , according to Hampton Police. First responders found the driver or a Chevrolet Malibu with critical injuries at the intersection. The bus driver was also hurt, police said.  The woman was  later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police said no students were on the school bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Hampton City Schools spokeswoman Diana Gulotta said the school division was "very saddened to learn about the death of the driver of the vehicle that collided with a Hampton City Schools bus.”

“Our thoughts go out to her family and friends,"  Gulotta said in an e-mail.

Our thoughts are also with the family of this driver who lost her life in a crash with a much larger and heavier vehicle. The Daily Press reported on a “preliminary investigation” that showed the school bus was heading northbound on Settler's Landing Road and attempted to make a left turn onto Pembroke Avenue.

The Chevrolet Malibu was reported to be traveling southbound on Queen Street towards Settlers Landing Road when both vehicles collided at the intersection, police said.

Hampton Police Division's Reconstruction Team remained at the site working the scene on Wednesday evening. Officers closed areas near the intersection of Settlers Landing Road, West Queen Street, and Pembroke Avenue while they worked, according to a police news release.

If you lose a loved one in an accident at an intersection caused by another party making a turn, you may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the other driver’s insurance policy.

In recent years we have noted a spate of fatal school bus accidents in Hampton Roads.  A number of these accidents have been caused by the careless driving of school bus drivers.
