Wrecks Involving Dump Trucks – Driver Runs Light and Kills Woman in Petersburg
Dump trucks are among the most dangerous vehicles on the roads of Virginia. Every year, wrecks involving dump trucks claim lives and leave people seriously injured.
I was saddened to read about how another innocent life has been lost due to a dump truck driver apparently failing to pay attention.
Police were called to an accident involving a dump truck and two vehicles on Route 460 in Petersburg.
Route 460 is a busy highway that links Suffolk with Petersburg. Although it is not an interstate, it carries a large amount of trucking traffic. Route 460 also has built-up areas where the speed limit slows and intersections with lights.

Police say the deadly crash occurred near Wagner Road around 5:44 p.m. on Tuesday. Two dump trucks were traveling on Route 460, police said.
The police report said the driver of the second dump truck failed to see a light at the intersection had changed and hit a vehicle that had the right of way on Wagner Road.
The wreck caused the death of a 23-year-old woman in the vehicle that was hit by the dump truck.
Police had not released the name of the woman killed in the dump truck crash. The same dump truck hit two other vehicles.
Four people were hurt. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
The dump truck veered off the road and ended up in a swamp.
Police did not say if the driver who caused the dump truck wreck would face criminal charges. My thoughts are with the family of the woman who died through no fault of her own.
Wrecks Involving Dump Trucks – The Most Dangerous Vehicles on the Roads
There is a disproportionate number of wrecks involving dump trucks, given the number of vehicles on the road.
Dump trucks can be deadly, because:
1 – They are heavy and difficult to steer
2 – They take a long time to come to a complete stop after the driver applies the brake.
3 – They carry cargo like loose stones and debris that can be a hazard to other road users if it falls off.
4 – Dump trucks work in dirty environments that cause wear and tear. They may be poorly maintained.
5 – Dump trucks and garbage trucks have large blind spots.
