Wrecks on Centerville Turnpike – Chesapeake Highway Claims Another Life

Wrecks on Centerville Turnpike in Chesapeake happen far too frequently. I was saddened to read about a crash on Wednesday that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man.

Police released few details about this crash. We know two vehicles were involved.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of S. Centerville Turnpike and Beaver Dam Road at about 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Emergency crews took two people to the hospital. A 60-year-old man died from his injuries at the hospital. The other motorist was hurt. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The wreck caused considerable delays on S. Centerville Turnpike on Wednesday afternoon. Police are investigating its causes.

Wrecks on Centerville Turnpike are a cause for concern

Centerville Turnpike has seen a series of wrecks

My thoughts are with the family of the man who died in this crash. As a Chesapeake resident I know S. Centerville Turnpike well.

In recent years, we have seen serious wrecks on Centerville Turnpike.

Last July, a head-on collision on Centerville Turnpike claimed the life of a female driver.

The wreck occurred near Hickory Station Drive around 5 a.m. Investigators said two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when they crashed into each other.

A 58-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the wreck scene. The man driving the other car was treated for minor injuries.

In a recent post, I noted how the roads of Chesapeake are becoming more hazardous. In 2015, Chesapeake was the most dangerous city in Virginia for motorists.

In that year there were 18 deaths and 2,685 vehicle crashes in Chesapeake.

However, Fairfax County in northern Virginia recorded the most fatal crashes in 2015 of any locality.  Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) figures revealed 30 people were killed in Fairfax in 2015.

We are concerned about the spate of wrecks on Centerville Turnpike.

The road runs from Virginia Beach down to the Hickory area. It can be winding in places and drivers often travel too fast on Centerville Turnpike.

If you are traveling on Centerville Turnpike please moderate your speed and be especially careful at intersections where traffic may pull out in front of you.
