Virginia Xarelto Dangerous Drugs Lawyers

Blood Thinner Xarelto is Linked to Serious and Fatal Bleeding

Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is a drug that has resulted in hundreds of lawsuits in recent years. It’s an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that is widely prescribed to prevent blood clots, and like another anticoagulant Pradaxa, the drug has been linked to life-threatening and, sometimes fatal, bleeding in patients. Its potentially negative side effects include strokes and deep vein thrombosis.

By their very nature these drugs carry risks. However, there are some dangers that are specific to Xarelto.

What is Xarelto and Why is it Prescribed?

Xarelto is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) which is manufactured by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s New Jersey-based unit, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. It has been widely prescribed to prevent blood clots in patients suffering from conditions including atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia of the heart); pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs); deep vein thrombosis (blood clots deep within the body) and stroke. Xarelto is also prescribed to patients who have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery. It is an alternative to Warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner that has been used since the mid 1950s.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Xarelto for patients who have had knee or hip replacement surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots, supposedly reducing the risk of stroke. After a fast track regulatory review the FDA approved Xarelto for general treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The drug sellers heavily advertise the product on TV.

What Are The Side Effects of Xarelto

Although it is seen as a modern replacement for warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), which has some downsides such as food and drug interactions, a 2011 study in the New England Journal of Medicine said there was no evidence that Xarelto is more effective than warfarin. It also has some potentially fatal downsides, namely:

1 Uncontrolled Bleeding:

Xarelto has no known antidote to stop uncontrollable bleeds, while warfarin does. Xarelto’s manufacturers have not yet released any information for doctors on how to treat this problem. A number of deaths have occurred from bleeding linked to this drug in emergency rooms.

2 Increased Blood Clot Risk

Although Xarelto is supposed to stop blood clots and reduce the incidence of heart attacks, information gathered from a number of FDA adverse events shows that some patients may be at increased risk for serious clots.

3 Paralysis

Patients who have spinal injections or similar procedures face increased risk of developing blood clots in the spine that can cause permanent paralysis.

4 Brain Hemorrhage

This serious type of stroke has been identified as a possible side effect of Xarelto use.

5 Low Platelet Count

A low platelet count is also called thrombocytopenia. This condition can range from mild to severe, depending on its underlying cause. Symptoms can include severe bleeding and are possibly fatal if not treated.

6 Wound Infections and Leakage

Several studies have suggested Xarelto can lead to higher rates of post-surgical wound complication than when total-hip and total-knee arthroplasty patients are given other medications such as low-molecular-weight heparin or aspirin and compression stockings.

Why Are Lawsuits Being Filed over Xarelto

More than 400 lawsuits have been filed in federal court, against Janssen Pharmaceutical and Bayer Healthcare, alleging the companies failed to warn patients and doctors of the increased risks of irreversible and fatal internal bleeding when using Xarelto. The complaint states that if the drug makers had properly warned of the Xarelto risks, then the patients would have instead been prescribed the drug warfarin by their doctors, a medication in which internal bleeding can be treated with high dosages of Vitamin K.
