Motorist is Killed in Head-on Collision on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News

Deadly crashes are not rare on Newport News’ accident-prone Jefferson Avenue. I am saddened to read about another fatal wreck on Jefferson Avenue this weekend that left one person dead.

Newport News Police Department said the crash occurred at 4:36 a.m. Sunday close to the intersection of Kingsway Drive and Jefferson Avenue.

Few details have been released about the circumstances of this deadly wreck but two vehicles hit each other head-on, according to Newport News police spokesman Sgt. Randy Rajkumar.

Details such as the gender or age of the victim have not been released. It’s also not clear if the deceased was a driver or a passenger.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim in this crash.

We have written at length about wrecks on Jefferson Avenue and helped people who have been injured in crashes on this busy urban highway.

Earlier this summer, four people were injured in a six car crash on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

Jefferson Avenue also has an appalling record for wrecks that have killed or injured pedestrians. You can read more about how people on foot have been hurt here.

We represent people who have been injured in car wrecks or the families of those who have lost their lives due to the fault of another driver.

Head on collisions are the most serious kind of wreck we see on the highways of Virginia. According to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials just under one in five fatal accidents are head-on collisions. However, head-on collisions comprise just two percent of wrecks overall. In other words, you are far more likely to lose your life in one of these accidents as the combined speeds of the vehicles adds to the force of the impact.

Head-on collisions may be caused by a wrong-way driver, a distracted driver or a motorist who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Usually, one driver is to blame for the wreck.

If you have lost a loved one in a head-on wreck, you may have grounds to file a claim against the insurance company of the culpable driver. Call us for a free consultation today at (757) 455-0077. We have client meeting locations on the Virginia Peninsula or we can come to you.
