School Bus With Granby High Students on Board Overturns in Norfolk

I was alarmed to read reports this morning about how a school bus with students on board overturned just off Interstate 64 on route to Granby High School.

WAVY.com captured images of the bus on its side on the I-64 on-ramp at Tidewater Drive and Thole Street in Norfolk. Police told the TV station there were students on the bus. Police said 10 students were taken to a local hospital. The extent of injuries is not clear but police said no life-threatening injuries are reported. Five medics attended the accident scene.

We sincerely hope nobody was seriously hurt in the latest school bus crash reported in Hampton Roads. An update from WAVY reported 10 students were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Karen Tanner with Norfolk Public Schools said the bus was apparently going up the I-64 on-ramp when it flipped over.

We are concerned about a spate of school bus accidents in recent years in Hampton Roads. It's always a cause for concern if a school bus overturns. Often these buses are not fitted with seat belts.

In October, five people were injured in Norfolk when a Hampton Roads Transit bus and a Norfolk Public School bus were involved in a wreck. The school bus did not have children on board at the time.

Five adults on the HRT bus were hospitalized after the wreck at North Military Highway and Norview Avenue. None of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.

Media reports said the school bus rear-ended the HRT bus.

We have written in the past about our concerns at the way school buses are being driven in the wake of numerous crashes in Hampton Roads. Thankfully, the buses have often been empty or students have not suffered serious injuries.

However, last year school bus crashes within days of each other injured 11 students in Suffolk and Poquoson. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening. In Poquoson, the driver lost control of the bus and ran off the road. The driver was charged with reckless driving.

In Hampton, a woman was recently killed when her car was in a collision with a school bus on Settler’s Landing Road. The bus was attempting to make a left turn.

We are aware of the shortage of school bus drivers in many Hampton Roads cities and remain concerned about these incidents. If you or a family member has been injured in a school bus crash, please call our Norfolk bus accident injury lawyers at (757) 455-0077.
